Ok so we have decided that we want to scratch build, well thats the first step but lets look at WHY we want to scratch build and hence our first step:
1) Motivation
So its great to have a huge model like a 40K Titan etc but first off we have to have the motivation to complete our project, you may think that its simply to get access to a big model that wil be a game winner, DO NOT use this as your primary motivation, it simply isnt the right way to go about things, scratch builds are something that yes you can get great fun out of when used and can be real fun to play in games but make sure you want to do them for reasons such as taking pride in your project, building something that you can share with other people and other people can enjoy seeing. Reasons such as these wil give you more motivation than simply wanting to win games.
2) Bits&bobs
Once you have chosen what to scratch build take some time to begin building a "bits box" of everyday items such as:
Drinking straws
Kitchen Roll Card inserts
Sturdy Card
Plastic Card
foam card
Contact Adhesive
PVA Glue
X Acto type precision knife
Craft Knife
Cuttign board
Bits and spares off model kits
All of these things and many many more items can be used int eh scratch build.
3) The Plans
If you are using plans for your scratch build read them over and over, understand them, if needed make some paper templates to pre-test parts that maybe awkward to fit together, also make sure you have alll the required materials for the build (see step 2 above).
4) Work out how many stages there maybe to your build, i usually say that their are three stages to any build:
a) the Build
b) detailing the model
c) painting the model
make sure you have all the things you need for each stage.
Once you have looked over these basic steps you should be ready to attempt your scratch build project..oh yes one more thing..GOOD LUCK & ENJOY IT! dont worry if it goes wrong, try it scratch building can be and is fun :D
