Outline:
Having failed in their bid to take the rail depot of Keswick Halt the confederate forces retired to their previous strong defensive postions around the natural redoubt just north of Kearneysville. The Union commander had no option but to advance and launch an assault upon this defensive postion.
Rules Used:
Time of Battle Chart : Battle ran from 7am till 5pm giving us ten game turns.

Battle Synopsis:
The actual game lasted some 4 hours total with a full ten game turns being played out, the confederates had some two regiments actually holding the redoubt and three more adavnacing from Kearneysville, added to this one cavalary unit approaching via the most direct route.
The Union force had some 12 regimants at its disposal, this force was split into three units, a left flank, right flank and centre assaulting unit.
Union units on map are shown in dark blue, confederate units shown in pale blue (numbers in white by confederate units show their actual turn of entry into the game).

The confederate troops rushed to the redoubt walls to man the guns as the union troops began thier attack. One brave confederate regiment took up postion outsside of the redoubt to act as a "forlorn hope" unit and stem the tide of advance on the union left flank.

The Union battle line was drawn up and ready for action with its "grand battery" facing the confederate redoubt. The rest of the union battle line begain its advance acroos the open country side towards the hasty yet impressive earthworks.

Under the blazing sunshine of the hot july day the strong blue line held firm under shot and shell relentless in its advance, it was at this stage that the right wing began to move forward and spotted the enemy units that were starting to filter in on the confederate left flank, these were reinforcments from kearneysville, at this stage it was imperative that these units did not get to advance and support the rebels in the redoubt and thus hamper the union centre line assault units approaching the redoubt.

As the day moved on and the time passed the union line made its way slowly forward and came under fire from the redoubt, with reckless abandiment the right flank union units threw themselves at the approaching confederate units, volley firing into the rebel lines but with no avail as the rebs stood their ground and responded like wise shattering the already exhausted union regiments to their front. taking shot from regiments to their front and from the stockade the right flank line broke and fell back, the union centre line assault units had by this time come to within shot range of the redoubt but couldnt make any head way as evening fell, mean while on the left flank after forcing the reb forlorn hope and the a unit of rebel cavalry back towards the redoubt the union left was in a postion to make its assault but once again time took its toll and as the dusk approached the command was given for the assault units to fall back and resume their start postions.

So it was as night fell the redout was still in rebel hands, however now it was under seige by the strong union force that was at first light seen to be attempting to encircle the redoubt and the rebel force there in. Rebel cavalry was last seen heading towards kearneysville where it is known the rest of the rebel corps are stationed, taking word of the situation of thier besiged brothers in arms.

Well of course its not over yet spike and of course the brave boys of the union will prevail *Hurrraggh*

i must say that i realy enjoyed this game it was so interesting and something different, iv not tried any sort of acw "seige" game before and was very pleased with the out come even though we failed to take the redoubt, it was just such an interesting game to play in, as always this was played in a super spirit and i must say young spike picked up the rules realy quickly and handled his units like a pro! and i see on the muster he has chosen to do the "iron brigade" well thats a famous regiment and he has some big shoes to fill there but im sure he will cope:)

Once again a special mention has to go out to young "blood&guts" charlie, love his playing style and his famous command of "the cavalry will now charge"..followed by andys cry of "it dam well will not!!" :D

Great game guys and a pleasure to play in once more, thank you to all the players.

Situation now...well looks like that rebel force will be marching out of kearneysville to try and prevent those blue boys from forming a seige line around that redoubt...could this be the next battle..hmmmm i wonder
