Greetings!

Welcome to a tale of five gamers, an article in which I get to prattle on at you about armies and warhammer in order to help you build and paint an army of your very own!

So, the first job you prospective gamers have is to pick an army, but which? For me the most important part of an army is the story behind it. When I win a game I like to know that it meant something to my general as well as myself, perhaps he routed an army intent on massacring his village, or that his valour earned him a promotion, giving me an excuse to give him special equipment like mounts and magic items. After deliberating over skaven I ended up picking the Empire as it has almost unlimited possibilities to build an army. With almost every weapon (combat and missile alike) and magic lore in the Warhammer rulebook in there somewhere I could make any army I choose, from an artillery carriage full of hand gunners and warmachines to an all mounted knightly order. Also though, it reminded me of my beloved Chaos army, it's what my army would be if it was good, full of noble knights and honourable heroes.

Right, army picked, so what did I buy with my initial £50? Every army needs core troops so I picked two boxes of state troops, the core of any empire force. These are brilliant buys because they come with enough bits to arm the soldiers in three different ways: spears, halberds or swords and shields. While temtped to arm them with the latter for the brilliant armour save i decided to stick to the background and equipped them with halberds (The counts of each province in the Empire must maintain a large core of halberdiers under the Emperor's decree). While not as sturdy they pack a nasty punch at strength 4.

In order to support them, I bought a box of militia. While suffering from the same low armour save as the state troops this box would give me a very flexible unit; I could either field it as a seperate 20 man unit, or break it into two 10 man detatchments for the state troops. This would allow them to automatically counter-charge any unit charging the halberdiers, or flank a unit the state troops charge, and armed with 2 hand weapons they can deal a hell of a lot of wounds for a unit that costs 5pts per model.

Finally, I brought a general to lead them. This is always the most important buy for me as as he is the centre peice of my army, and if looks rubbish then so will everything else. To this end I bought the Empire Captian with gory blade from the GW online store, he looks simple (as he would be as a lowly officer) yet deadly with his well used blade and intimidating stance. This should give me a nasty little skirmish force, with lots of combat potential, I'll just have to watch out against armies with lots of guns and magic!

Though not essential I gave my army a back story. This can really help you get a feel for your new army and develop it. My story revolves around Burgomeister (merchant noble) Seigfreid Goldschmidt, a man of Marienburg who beleives the simple things in life like making money, dressing flamboyantly and exploiting the poor are what matters most, why risk that fighting another man's war when you can pay people to do it for you? However when a financial transaction goes horribly wrong Seigfreid found himself fleeing Marienburg down the coastal road, far away from the hands (and daggers) of his creditors. After being discovered drunk in The Hobbled Orc coaching house by an imperial patrol he was taken before the Count of Nordland, who offered the nobleman a deal: he would place him under the protection of the Empire and keep him as far away from Marienberg as possible if he swore allegiance to the Emperor. Seigfreid heartily agreed. Only once the oaths had been recited did the Count tell him his first duty would be to fund the rebuilding of a town destroyed during the Storm of Chaos, and that he was to lead the detatchment sent to clear the area. Forced to fight having never touched a weapon before, his wealth appropriated for the rebuilding of a shanty town he has no care for and surrounded by commoners, Seigfreid was beginning to wonder whether Marienburg would have been safer!

Budget: £50
Spent: State Troops box set: £12
State Troops box set: £12
Militia Bos set: £18
Empire Captain with gory blade: £7
Total: £49
Remainder: £1

Well, June was a stupidly busy month for me, and not being the type of person who can just sit down and batch paint an army, I already appear to be struggling. However, utilising the stoic resolve and the determination of the Empire I soldiered forth! Both units of troops are built and with much frantic brushing of the paint I’ managed to get all the halberdier’s and thirteen out of twenty militia painted. Even though it’s only early days I’ve already hit a major snag with the state troops that has had me tearing my hair out: ranking them up. To any prospective Empire player I have one bit of advise for you: Don't glue the arm's until last! The charging forward pose of these new plastics is brilliant but more often than not causes their weapons to skewer the guy in front, and I might actually have to rip off all the arms and start again to rank mine up, or cheat and make a big movement tray for them, but for now I’ve left them.

As to the painting, I went for the traditional blue/yellow split for the state troops with green details, while the militia were painted in varying styles to represent their diversity (farmers and peasants dragged to war by the count are unlikely to have a uniform) with certain details picked out in blue and yellow to tie them in with the rest of the army. I’ve tried not to make the details like belt daggers and charms stand out too much as I wanted to represent the fact that Nordland is in a pretty much constant state of war from pirate raiders and Chaos invasions, therefore having little time or need for glamour. I’m very pleased with the end results, and I can easily get 3-5 done in an evening (this may not be a lot to some of you but is about a weeks worth of work for me!).

I didn’t get anywhere near the amount of games I wanted to get done in, in fact I only got one against Jim’s Beastmen! I won’t even bother with a battle report as my troops were mowed down with extreme prejudice. Beast Herd’s are hard! Skirmishing infantry that can gain rank bonuses? Ouch! My blocky units were outmanoeuvred and flanked by the speed brutes (and just to make it clear how badly I was mauled I had both 20 man units and he only had one beast herd!). The learning points from this quite obviously is that my army isn’t very manouverable and is vulnerable to skirmishers and cavalry and, and with no shooting or magic I must resort to combat to win, but with such poor stats that’s a real struggle! Buying the Battalion in the first months would have certainly given me a much rounder force, with combat and shooting infantry, heavy and light cavalry and a war machine to boot! There were two reasons I didn’t do this, the first being I would never have got all that painted and the second being I like to build new armies up from nothing; it gives it more character making the most of what little you have. In hindsight however I’m starting to feel my choice wasn’t well thought through…

You may have noticed I haven’t mentioned anything of my character so far. For those that were wondering Goldschmidt was so petrified of the task given to him by the count he not only failed to turn up to this battle, he failed to arrive on my door step. Due to an error in processing my payment details…three times…GW were unable to send me the empire captain model I so desperately wanted, and I had no more patience to mess around on their site so will be refunding £7 from last months purchase and adding it to this month! Which brings me nicely on to this months purchases! It took little time for me to decide upon a box of Pistoliers. This guys a light cavalry armed with twin pistols and will be a nightmare for my opponent as they add both speed and shooting to my army, giving it a bit more flexibility. On top of this they have the fast cavalry rule which is brilliant for allowing your cavalry to lure away enemies within charge range of your own units, which should hopefully mean my halberdiers will actually manage a charge! With my first purchase in the bag it didn’t take me long to decide upon my second: a unit of Handgunners. These guys are the reason I started an Empire army; they look so cool and are deadly to all but the heaviest of infantry. With speed and shooting now I will hopefully be able to put up a solid resistance and if I’m lucky win a game or two!

Budget: £33
Spent: Pistoliers boxed set £12
Handgunners boxed set £12
Total: £24
Remainder: £9
