ok, to make the base i put 4 25mm bases onto card, covered it with glue and then smothered rocks and other slates ontop, waited to dry and then painted black.... when painting sand always put a bit of water into it so the sand soaks it up and maintains its black colour... to much water will result in tinted sand!.
second after doing that i mounted the lion (from the high elves) ontop of the rocks with some green stuff, (putting the lion in a heroic pose ^^) then filed it down to make a rock, dont worry about how messy it is, can always be flocked later...
or you can start the base first!...

just undercoat it in black like how i said, then get a worn large brush to do some drybrushing!, if you want a lighter base, go for a umber undercoat, then a yellow/orange colour and dry brush all the sand, or if you want a darker colour, use a black with a grey high light, i have gone for grey, after doing this get some black and some dark grey and mix it 50/50 and cover all the slates, slabs, what ever large rocks you may have stuck to it.. then you can either work them up with drybrushing or paint the tones up then finish with a white light drybrush at the end, the skulls were done with a dark grey deep darkbrushing and then lots of coats of lighter white drybushing... finished with a white painted highlight on each one...
but which ever way you do it you will end up with something like this...

using mostly purples, whites and blues to get the effect right...
green stuff is strongly recommened for any conversion, i had to make one of her legs/feet beacuse it was destroyed in the (get the darn thing of the steed) stage, which i may post in this thread at a later stage... anway you might want to green stuff around the main and where the ropes holding them on the high elf chariot was (also the small hole in the top if you want... but it doesnt matter that much beacuse you will stick a rider on top)...
(still undergoing painting but feel free to comment)
